Beast Girl

My senior year of high school I gave a speech on animal testing. And for a while after giving the speech and doing the research I avoided companies that I found did test on animals like the black plague. I stopped buying Iams pet food for my cats (I have two, which is partly why this topic is of interest to me) , convinced my mom to stop using Palmolive dish soap and was more conscious about companies policy on the matter. However it became increasingly hard to regulate that all the items I used were "cruelty free" when some of my most essential daily items were from companies that did test on animals. I was reminded to keep on trying this weekend when I stumbled upon Personal Care for People Who Care-- a publication of the NAVS at goodwill. It was only a dollar and rather than list weird obscure companies, which is what I encountered when I did my research back in high school, it concentrated on cosmetic and personal care companies. I thought I'd share some of the companies that do and do not test on animals with my readers. Why? Because there's this erroneous idea that people that care about fashion are vain and superficial and I think it's important that we don't accidentally feed into that stereotype. This is still a fashion blog though so I limited the list to companies that are somewhat related to fashion and beauty.

First, companies that do test on animals:
Venus Shaving Products
Vera Wang Fragrances
BCBG Max Azria Fragrances
Tampax
Ralph Lauren
Nair
Herbal Essences
Kleenex
Johnson & Johnson
Acuvue (this is one of those essential items I mentioned before, Acuvue is the only contact lenses company I've ever used...)

Companies that do not test on animals:
Urban Decay cosmetics
Tommy Hilfiger Products
The Body Shop
Revlon
MAC
Liz Clairborne Inc
Hard Candy Cosmetics
Chanel Inc (yay)
Bumble & Bumble Products
Avon Products

I don't even understand how testing on animals is so helpful--their body chemistry is so different. Thanks for posting the lists.

Your illustration totally made me think, "My God! They're giving pop quizzes to animals now!" But then sanity returned.

This is really great info to have. I avoid animal testing at all costs so it's nice to know there's info out there for others that would like to do the same. Thanks!
